Imphal, Jun 3: The National Commission for Women has expressed disatisfaction with the increased violence on women and violation of rights in the North East.

The Commission member Malini Bhattacharya said here today that the violence on women was not reflected in the national media hence people were not aware of the problem.

She said the Commission has recommended to the Centre to punish those involved in the alleged rape and killing of T H Manorama in July 2004.

Sources said T H Manorama was found dead after she was apprehended by a team of 17 Assam Rifles.

The Commission also went to Tripura to inquire into a rape case committed by the Assam Rifles, she added.

The Commission has submitted a report on the alleged rape and torture of 25 women at Manipur's Churachandpur district by suspected militants, she said.

She said the Commission has submitted the report to the central government and would discuss the issue with Governor Dr S S Sidhu, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and State Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh.

Mrs Bhattacharya said the victims have not received any medical treatment so far and many of them were young girls, who need specialised medical treatment.

She said the Commission would organise medical camp to meet the victims so that their sufferings could be addressed.

The Manipur government has also assured to take up necessary steps to implement the recommendations of the Commission, she said.

Special training, payment of relief, rehabilitation package, trauma counselling were recommended by the Women Commission.
