Governor lays foundation stone for tennis excellence centre
Mumbai, Jun 3 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna today laid the foundation stone for an international-standard Tennis Excellence Centre at the Kalina campus of the Mumbai University here.
The Centre, a collaborative effort of the Mumbai University and the All India Tennis Association (AITA), is to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore.
As per the collaboration, the AITA would help the university in designing and executing the plan and raising funds which would be handed over to the university after the completion.
The funding would be done by the Ministry of Sports and apart from tennis, other sports projects are also in the pipeline.
The Governor, speaking on the occasion, said the excellence centre would hopefully groom tennis stars who would bring laurels to the country.
As per the plan, the complex would house around 15 synthetic tennis courts and two grass courts. Apart from a gymnasium and training courts, the Centre would also provide a seating capacity of 7000 for the spectators.
The University with the help of AITA would conduct certificate courses for coaches at the Centre.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh along with officials of the AITA were present on the occasion.
