Jalandhar, Jun 3 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today appealed to the journalists to restrain from sensationalising reports and urged them to highlight development issues.

Addressing mediapersons after formally inaugurating the Punjab Press Club, the Chief Minister said, ''Sometimes the issues are blown out of proportions by the media to sensationalise the news reports at the behest of opposition just to malign the ruling party''.

He urged them to highlight the ongoing development activities in the state and bring awareness amongst the masses ''without adding any kind of surmises and conjectures''.

''By doing so you will be rendering a great service to the humanity, thereby, securing the future of the state in general and of younger generations in particular,'' he said.

Speaking on the Reliance controversy, Capt Singh said journalists should have checked the facts before projecting them in their writings.

The Chief Minister said though the electronic media is spreading fast, the print media still held far more credibility because of its unique characteristic of permanence.

He told the journalists that their writings in the print media left an indelible mark on the minds of the readers and, thus, they should be extra cautious and vigilant in filing their stories and should not aim to distort facts in the larger interest of public.
