TDP creating hurdles for irrigation intiative: YSR

Nutipadu, Andhra Pradesh, Jun 2 (UNI) Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today castigated the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for creating hurdles for the state government in the construction of irrigation projects.

Addressing a public meeting here, Dr Reddy said some political parties approached the court and stopped the construction work on Pulichintala Project on the pretext the government had not taken permission.

He reminded them the projects already completed in the state had been done constructed without any permission.

The state government had obtained environmental clearance for Pulichintala Project and the construction work had already began.

Work on Polavaram will begin in two to three months.

Dr Reddy said Andhra pradesh stood a role model for other states in irrigation schemes. Even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh praised the initiative taken by the government on irrigation projects and suggested other states to follow its footsteps.

Once the Dummugudem and Indirasagar Projects were completed, water would be supplied to upland areas of Krishna District. The Nagarjunsagar Canal will be modernised at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore solving water problems in the surrounding areas once and for all.

In the last 150 years, water supplied from various projects had irrigated 70 lakh acre in the state. However, in the next five years, another 70 lakh acre will be irrigated due to the implemenation of various projects.
