Local body polls: Parties begin consultations on alliances

Pondicherry, Jun 2 (UNI) With the local body elections in Pondicherry around the corner, political parties have began consultations to finalise alliance partners.

DMK Convenor R V Janakiraman led a delgation to a meeting with PCC President P Shanmugham and held talks on seat sharing.According to sources, this indicated the DMK-Congress alliance will continue for the local body polls as well.

The combine had fought the Assembly elections held in May.

Mr Shanmugham informed them he would consult the Congress office bearers and give a reply in a couple of days, they added.

Meanwhile, AIADMK State Secretary A Anbazhagan said the party high command had constituted a committee to hold talks with parties to finalise alliance partners.

The Puducherry Munnetra Congress, which contested the Assembly elections as an alliance partner of the AIADMK, had already announced the arrangement was restricted only to the Assembly polls.

With the filiing of nominations for the first phase of election scheduled for June 24, beginning tomorrow, political parties are in a hurry to finalise alliances.

Elections for the post of municipal chairman, councillor and commune panchayat council member will be held on party basis.
