Inflation moves further upwards to 4.58 per cent

New Delhi, June 2: The annual rate of inflation rose to 4.58 per cent for the week ended May 20, as against 4.32 per cent during the previous week due to an increase in food, energy and manufactured product prices.

The inflation rate, calculated on point-to-point basis, stood at 5.38 per cent during the corresponding week of the previous year, according to official figures released here today.

The index for Minerals group rose by 4.4 per cent to 357.7 from 342.7 for the previous week due to higher prices of steatite (16 per cent), barytes (10 per cent) and iron ore (5 per cent). However, the prices of magnesite (8 per cent) declined. The index for the Fuel, Power, Light and Lubricants group declined marginally to 319.7 from 319.8 for the previous week due to lower prices of furnace oil (1 per cent).

The index for Manufactured Products group rose by 0.1 per cent to 175.1 from 175.0 for the previous week.

The index for Food Products rose by 0.1 per cent to 178.2 from 178.0 for the previous week due to higher prices of oil cakes, rice bran oil and groundnut oil (1 per cent each).

However, the prices of biscuits (4 per cent), gur (2 per cent) and coconut oil and imported edible oil (1 per cent each) declined.

The index for Chemicals and Chemical Products group declined by 0.1 per cent to 192.4 from 192.5 for the previous week due to lower prices of organic pigments (7 per cent) and trimethoprim (1 per cent).

The index for Basic Metals Alloys and Metal Products group rose by 1 per cent to 221.5 from 221.3 for the previous week due to higher prices of pipes and tubes (4 per cent).

However, the prices of other iron steel and ms bars and rounds (2 per cent each) and basic pig iron and foundary pig iron (1 per cent each) declined.

The index for Machinery and Machinery Tools group rose by 0.3 per cent to 151.0 from 150.6 for the previous week due to higher prices of valve (all types) (14 per cent), other pumps (3 per cent) and mono block pumps and power driven pumps (1 per cent each).

The index for Transport Equipment and Parts group rose by 0.4 per cent to 160.8 from 160.2 for the previous week due to higher prices of body manufactured for trucks, vans etc (8 per cent) and bus chassis (diesel) (1 per cent).
