CCEA okays two hydroelectric power projects in J

New Delhi, June 2 (UNI) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today approved two power projects for Jammu and Kashmir including the Rs 621.26-crore Chutak Hydro-electric project, to be built by the National Hydroeletric Power Corporation (NHPC) in the Kargil region.

Briefing newspersons after the Cabinet meeting, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi today said the second project, namely the 45 MW Nimoo Bazgo Hydroelectric Project to be set up by NHPC, would enable the state government to reduce the power shortage in the Ladakh region, which is not connected with the Northern Grid.

In the case of the 44 MW Chutak Hydroelectric Project, grant earmarked for the 220 kV Srinagar-Leh transmission line would be reallocated to this project. Of this, the equity from the Central Government would be Rs 186.38 crore while the Central grant totalled Rs 364 crore. The amount of commercial loan would be Rs 70.88 crore.

The project, which is scheduled for commissioning within 54 months from the date of sanction, will reduce the power shortage in the Kargil region.

Mr Dasmunshi said the the Nimoo Bazgo Hydroelectric Project would be set up by NHPC at an estimated cost of Rs 611.01 crore by reallocating the grant earmarked for the 220kV Srinagar-Leh transmission line to the project.

The equity for the project from the Central Government amounted to Rs 183.30 crore, with the central grant totalling Rs 270 crore and commercial loan of Rs 157.71 crore.

The two projects along with five other hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir was entrusted to the NHPC under a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Union Government and the state government on July 20, 2000.
