SC refuses to list petition on Fanaa for hearing

New Delhi, June 1: The Supreme Court refused to give any date for hearing of a petition filed by eminent film producer Mahesh Bhatt and Jan Sangharsh Manch seeking directions to the Director General of Police (DGPs) of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to provide protection to theatres exhibiting Aamir Khan Starrer ''Fanaa''.

The vacation Bench comprising Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice C K Thakker, however, directed the counsel for the petitioner to file a memo and then the Court shall consider giving the date for hearing of the petition.

The Court enquired, ''what orders can we pass?'' Petitioner's counsel, however, contended that earlier there was trouble in Gujarat now it has spread to Madhya Pradesh and UP also.

The Court told the petitioner that the distributor concerned can approach the local police for protection.

Organisation affiliated with Sangh Parivar have been protesting against the exhibition of the movie in cinema theatres in view of the stand taken by Aamir Khan in Narmada Bachao Andolan.

Aamir has said that oustees must be rehabilitated first and construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam Project should follow next.

Petitioner's counsel also pleaded that earlier the same thing happened to another movie ''Fire'' in which a Muslim girl was named Sita.
