Relief Operations for Indonesian Quake Victims Reviewed
New Delhi, June 1 (UNI) Indian relief operations for the victims of last week's earthquake in Indonesia were today reviewed at a high-level meeting here of officials from the Ministries of Defence, Finance and External Affairs and the Armed Forces.
The meeting, chaired by Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Lt Gen HS Lidder, took stock of the post-quake situation in Indonesia and the rehabilitation assistance extended by India to the victims.
Following the 6.3 richter temblor -- which claimed more than 6,200 lives and destroyed about 10,500 houses, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced aid worth 2 million US Dollars (Rs 9.2 crore approximately) to Indonesia comprising relief material and medical assistance.
India has so far sent two plane-loads of relief material from here. In addition, a naval ship carrying relief material sailed from Chennai on Tuesday last. Earlier, another Indian Navy ship on overseas deployment in the South China Sea had detoured to Indonesia with emergency relief material and medicines.
