No curfew relaxation in Aligarh on fifth day
Aligarh, June 1 : The district administration has decided not to relax curfew in five police station areas of this sensitive town on the fifth day in succession.
An indefinite curfew was clamped in Sasani Gate, Dehli Gate, Kotwali, Bannadevi and Gandhi Park areas following last Sunday's communal violence.
''No relaxation has been planned even as no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere in the town,'' a District Administration spokesman said.
Violence had erupted after local BJP leader and trader O P Gupta was shot dead by armed miscreants. While Bablu -- one of the accused -- was lynched by locals, Azimullah died of bullet wounds in a city hospital. At least nine people were also wounded in the clash.
Meanwhile, senior officials including ADG (Law and Order) Padman Singh, Agra division commissioner Ashok Kumar and IG (Kanpur Zone) Rizwan Ahmed are camping in Aligarh and keeping a close watch on the developments.
As many as 123 people had been arrested, some of them on the charge of violating curfew orders. Several anti-socials had also been apprehended by the police, the spokesman said.
