Mercury rises in north-west region
Chandigarh, Jun 1 (UNI) Schorching heat prevailed in north-west India as the mercury continued its upward movement even though many areas in the region experienced rain during the past 24 hours.
The maximum temperature hovered one degree to three degrees Celsius above normal at many places in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh making the people suffer from intense heat. However, the mercury stayed one degree below normal at Chandigarh and Karnal.
The mercury soared to 42.8 degrees Celsius at Hissar, making it to be the hottest place in Haryana, followed by Ambala recording 41.0 degrees and Karnal 39.0 degrees Celsius. Ambala recorded traces rainfall till this morning.
In Punjab the mercury stayed above normal. Ludhiana was the hottest place in the state with the maximum touching 41.8 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal. Patiala and Amritsar registered 41.6 degrees. Amritsar experienced 2.2 mm rain till 0830 hours.
Hot weather conditions persisted in Chandigarh and its surrounding areas although the city experienced 24.8 mm rain till this morning.
The temperature stayed one degrees below normal in Chandigarh recording 38.3 degrees. People in Delhi experienced intense heat with the mercury touching 41.9 degrees at Palam and 41.0 degrees at Safdurjung. The national capital also reported rain.
The temperatures also rose in Himachal Pradesh where several areas, including Bhuntar, Sundernagar Pandoh, Suni, Kasol, Kahu, Guler, Nagrota Surian, Gamroor and Shimla experienced rain. State capital Shimla recorded the temperature at 27.4 degrees, three degrees above normal.
Western disturbance persisted over Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining Himachal Pradesh as an upper air cyclonic circulation extended upto 3.5 km above sea level, according to the weather office here. The induced upper air cyclonic circulation lay over north Rajasthan and the neighbourhood, extending upto 900 metres above sea level.
The weather office has predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh and few places in Haryana and Punjab. Hailstorm or thundersquall with speed exceeding 65 km per hour is likely to occur at isolated palces in the region.
