Guwahati, June 1 (UNI) The Inland Waterway Authority of India (IWAI) has sought the intervention of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to ask the PSUs to use the National Waterway No II on the river Brahmaputra, to keep it in business.

''There are enough movement by the PSUs both inways and outways.

The PMO can ask them to transport at least 5 per cent of the cargo, which is not only economically viable, but also less expensive and less hazardous,'' said IWAI Director (North Eastrn Region) M K Saha.

At present the cargo movement in the whole stretch of 891 kms is very less even as IWAI is not only building port at Pandu but also maintaining the whole channel.

Mr Saha infomed that Numlaigarh Refinery Ltd (NRL), which has been using the waterway to send their petroleum products, is demanding a reduction in the carriage charges.

About 10 trips, carrying 1200 metric tonnes of products and taking around 45 days each time, have already been performed for the company.
