English medium students fare better than Gujarati, Hindi in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Jun 1 (UNI) English medium students fared far better than Gujarati or Hindi medium students in the Tenth Standard Gujarat Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Examination, the results of which were declared today.

While the overall pass percentage of 557,681 students who wrote their papers in March is 62.71 per cent, in case of 28,328 English medium students though small in number was 87.63 per cent, 12,924 Hindi medium students 54.36 per cent and 675,989 Gujarati medium students 56.34 per cent.

Briefing newspersons about its highlights here today, Gujarat Secondary Education Board spokesman said this year result was 5.53 per cent higher than last year and 10.90 per cent higher than the last five years' average.

In all, 107,109 students got First Class with Distinction this year, which was 52,941 higher than last year. The spokesman attributed it to change in the marking system.

As in other years, the girl students again fared better with 66.52 per cent as against boys' 60.52 per cent. As many as 23 out of the merit list of 38 students for the Top Ten positions (some bracketed) are girls.

Miss Avani Pankajkuman Shah of Vadodara has topped the merit list with 97 per cent marks, Miss Harvi Pankajkumar Desai also of Vadodara stood second wing 98.86 per cent and Master Harsh Nikhilkumar Oza third with 96.71 per cent marks.
