Srinagar, Jun 1 (UNI) A 29-member Parliamentary standing committee on Urban Development took stock of various ongoing programmes in the Kashmir valley, an official spokesman said today.

The members, who arrived here yesterday on a two-day tour to the Valley, visited the Boat Colony at Bemina and Town hall in Kunzer and took stock of various works under execution in these areas.

The Committee, headed by Mohammad Saleem, was informed that under the Integrated Development of Small and Medium Town Scheme (IDSMT), the Kunzer project was sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 82.44 lakh under different components, including construction of shops and bus stands besides street lighting and development of parks.

Most of the works have been completed and macadamisation of the bus stands was in progress, the parliamentarians were told.

Under VAMBAY Scheme, about 25 units were sanctioned with a cost of Rs 11.25 lakh.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Saleem called for creating durable and eco-friendly community assets and for their proper maintenance.

During the visit to Bemina, the residents made some demands, including regular supply of drinking water, improvement in electricity and drainage systems.

About 442 families were at present put up in the colony and extended financial assistance for construction of dwellings.

Mr Saleem assured them that their genuine demands would be addressed in a phased manner.

The officials from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha Secretariats also accompanied the Committee members.
