UP to act tough against illegal use of sirens, beacon lights
Lucknow, May 31 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to act tough against the unauthorised use of sirens and red/blue beacon lights atop vehicles.
A directive to this effect was issued to UP Director General of Police (DGP) Bua Singh by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav here today.
Mr Yadav asked the DGP to initiate action within a week for removal of red/blue beacon lights and sirens used in an unauthorised manner.
This comes in the wake of a near-fatal attack yesterday on a senior police official posted in Lucknow by five youth driving a jeep fitted with with red beacon and hooter.
The five brothers had claimed to be kin of a senior leader of the ruling Samajwadi Party in UP. They tried to run over Chowk police station Circle Officer (CO) Rajesh Sahni, who had stopped their jeep for routine checking.
The accused were beaten up by agitated lawyers this afternoon, when they were produced before the court of additional chief judicial magistrate R P Tripathi. The court remanded them in judicial custody till June 14.
Meanwhile, the DGP told newspersons the youth had no political connections and one of them even had an eve-teasing case registered at Kanpur.
Mr Singh also slammed Lucknow Police for tardy action in the matter. ''Policemen tried to intercept the jeep...We could not open fire as the area was crowded. The entire drama lasted only eight minutes,'' he said.
