Tarn Taran to become 19th district of Punjab

Chandigarh, May 31 (UNI) The creation of the holy town of Tarn Taran as Punjab's 19th district was today approved by the state Cabinet in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh here.

The new district would comprise of 493 revenue villages in three sub divisions of Tarn Taran, Khadoor Sahib and Patti. It would be a part of Jalandhar Division.

The new district will come into effect on June 16, the day the Sikh 'Panth' commemorates the 400th martyrdom of the fifth Sikh Guru Arjan Dev. Tarn Taran was founded by Guru Arjan Dev and has since become an important centre of pilgrimage for the Sikhs.

Tarn Taran is currently a part of Amritsar district, the biggest district of Punjab. During the period of militancy in the state, Tarn Taran was made a police district, as it was one of worst affected areas where even the elite National Security Guards (NSG) remained deployed for sometime.

During the rule of the present Congress government, two districts have been carved out so far. Mohali became the 18th district on April 14 this year.
