Series of programmes held in capital on World No Tobacco day
New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) A series of programmes to spread the message about the ills of tobacco were held in the capital today to mark the 'World No Tobacco Day'.
On this occasion, the Vithalbhai Patel chest institute, in collaboration with the world lung foundation, South Asia, organised a public education programme on the harmful effects of tobacco.
The theme for this year's education programme is "Tobacco: deadly in any form or disguise". Among the facts highlighted in the public education programme, that providing a glimpse of the magnitude of threat of tobacco, are: every ten second one person dies in the world as a result of causes related to tobacco use, tobacco contains over 4000 chemicals including more than 60 carcinogens (cancer producing agents), tobacco use causes the skin to wrinkle leading to premature ageing and that illiteracy and poverty have a direct link with tobacco consumption.
Also organised as part of world tobacco day was a seminar conveying harmful effects of smoking on respiratory and cardiovascular health. Those who have quit smoking through the Tobacco cessation clinic of the Vithalbhai Patel chest institute motivated others to quit smoking by narrating their personal experiences. Tese people were publicly felicitated on the occasion.
Yesterday also a number of programmes were organised to highlight harmful effects of tobacco consumption.
A tableau-cum-mobile exhibition on the harmful effects of tobacco, that will create awareness on the issue all over the city, was flagged off from outside the Delhi Secretariat yesterday afternoon by Delhi health minister Yoganand Shashtri.
