Punjab govt urges Centre to pay compensation to terrorist affected

Chandigarh, May 31 (UNI) The Punjab government, while giving its nod for providing financial relief to the Jodhpur detenues, also decided to urge the Union government to pay compensation to 9000 terrorist affected families of the state on a par with 1984 riot victims..

The compensation would involve a financial liability to the tune of Rs 405 crore.The compensation would be in the form of ex-gratia and rehabilitation grant.

This decision was taken at a meeting of the Council of Ministers held here today under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.

The Cabinet was informed that the state government had so far disbursed financial grant of Rs 168.32 crore to 8416 victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as per the recommendations of Justice Nanawati Commission.

Regarding Jodhpur detenues, the meeting approved to pay a total compensation of Rs 3.65 crore to 365 detenues at the rate of Rs one lakh per detenue. These detenues were those who were arrested during 'Operation Bluestar' in June 1984 from the Golden Temple.
