PCC to organise mass movement against LF for NREGS

Kolkata, May 30 (UNI) The West Bengal Congress would organise a mass movement against the CPI(M)-led Left Front government for 'failing' to implement the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in the state.

The Congress- led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had introduced 100-days' assured NREGS in 200 districts throughout the country, out of which ten are in West Bengal from February last.

However, according to information collected by the PCC from the panchayat and village development department only 24,55,883 families have registered their names in the schemes and only 6,69,459 families have collected the job card, WBPCC working president Pradip Bhattacharjee said at a press conference.

'' The state government is bound to give job card to the families which have applied for registration, but there are several differences between the registation and job cards,'' he said.

He alleged that the state government had not taken the NREGS seriously and was not attaching much importance to it, thereby depriving the poor of the benefits of the scheme.

''Except Bengal all other states had taken the scheme seriously,'' he claimed.

'' We have instructed the ten district committees to pressurise the state administration to implement the scheme immediately. We have called them here on June 12 to chalk out the next course of action,'' Mr Bhattacharjee added.
