NFIW welcomes 33 pc women's quota in Nepal
New Delhi, May 31: The National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) today termed as 'historic' the passage of a proposal by the Nepal parliament on 33 per cent reservation for women at all levels of state mechanism.
Political parties and State authorities in India need to take note of the progressive Nepali measure and adopt the pending bill on reservation for women in legislative bodies here, an NFIW statement said.
''The Central Secretariat of NFIW hails the proposal unanimously passed by the parliament of Nepal''. Besides the reservation clause, the proposal also obliges the government to issue citizenship certificate to offspring with the mother as approver or guardian.
Noting that women in the thousands fought alongside men for restoration of multi-party democracy in the Himalayan kingdom, the NFIW expressed hope that the forthcoming constituent assembly would give the historic proposal a legal shape while striving to build a modern Nepal.
