Medical services continue to be hit in Northern states

Chandigarh, May 31 (UNI) Medical services in Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh continued to remain affected as doctors ignoring the directions of the Supreme Court abstained from work.

A report from Rohtak said that Haryana's premier medical institution-Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak were severely affected today as the faculty members of the institute went on mass casual leave (CL) in protest against the 27 per cent reservation to the OBCs in higher education institutions. The emergency services, however, were maintained as these were kept out of the purview of the anti-quota protest by the PGIMS faculty members.

Though the PGIMS Administration had made alternative arrangement to run the out patient departments (OPDs) with the help of doctors belonging to the Haryana Civil Medical Services (HSMS) from the state health department. The number of patients turning up in the OPDs for treatment was significantly less than on the normal days.

A report from Yamunanagar said that students of a private dental college took out a procession in the town and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and HRD minister Arjun Singh.

In Punjab, medical services were hit in Amritsar, Patiala, Ludhiana and Faridkot as medicos and medical college students of both government and medical colleges continue to boycott OPD services. In Chandigarh, government medical college students continued with their agitation affecting services at the medical college hospital.
