India's GDP up at 8.4 per cent in 2005-06

New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by a robust 8.4 per cent in 2005-06, with agriculture growing at an encouraging 3.9 per cent and manufacturing by a healthy 9 per cent, surpassing official and private estimates.

The Central Statistical Organisation's revised estimates of National Income, released here today, for Q4 and fiscal 2005-06 paint a sound picture of the economy with agricultural growth showing better prospects.

The GDP at factor cost at constant (1999-2000) prices was put at Rs 25,95,339 crore against Rs 25,86,587 crore estimated earlier, up by one per cent over the 2004-05 growth of 7.5 per cent.

Sectors such as 'construction' showed double-digit growth rates of 12.1 per cent followed by 'trade, hotels, transport and communication' with 11.5 per cent.

Other sectors which showed growth rates of more than 5 per cent were 'financing, insurance, real estate and business services' (9.7 per cent), 'manufacturing' (9.0 per cent), 'community, social and personal services' (7.8 per cent) and 'electricity, gas and water supply' (5.3 per cent).
