Hectic political activities on for biennial council elections
Mumbai, May 31 (UNI) Hectic political activities are for the biennial Maharashtra legislative council elections for 11 seats to be elected by 289 members of the state Assembly tomorrow.
Sources said chances of horse trading are ample as both Congress and NCP have fielded an extra candidate each, while PWP contestant is also in fray. The quota for one member to get elected is 25 in the first preference votes.
In all, thirteen candidates are in fray for 11 seats. The are Ulhas Pawar, Govindrao Adik, S Q Zama and Rajan Teli (Congress), Arun Gujarathi, Usha Darade, Vasant Oswal (NCP), Pasha Patel and Keshavrao Mankar (BJP), Parshuram Uparkar and Vijay Loke (Shiv Sena), Jayant Patil (PWP), and Preetam Shegaonkar (RPI-supported by NCP). Of these, Pawar, Adik and Jayant Patil are retiring members, who are seeking re-election.
The effective strength of the legislative assembly is 289 which has Congress-73, NCP-71, Shiv Sena-58, BJP-54, PWP-2, CPM-3, JSS-4 and BBM, RPI, Swatantra Bharat Party and ABS with one member each.
There are 19 independents and one nominated member.
