Excise and service tax evasion of Rs 89 crore in 93 cases

New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) The Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI) has booked 93 cases of evasion of Central Excise Duty and Service Tax involving an amount of Rs 88.96 crore.

As many as 38 cases relate to Excise duty evasion involving a revenue of Rs 35.43 crore and 55 cases of service tax entailing a Rs 55. 53 crore during April, 2006.

The Directorate also recovered an amount of Rs 29.11 crore as voluntary payment of duty during investigations.

The cases of Central Excise relate to clandestine clearence of Sponge Iron and Ferro Mangenese by a Kolkata- based group of companies; clearence of CENVAT inputs without proper payment of duty by a Howrah firm.

In the service tax category the cases relate to non-payment of service tax by an airline and another by an oil company.

It also entails non-payment of service tax on transport of goods by road by a Chennai-based company as well as by a Mumbai-based firm.
