Drug inspectors in Mizoram face contempt of court
Aizawl, May 31 (UNI) Drug inspectors in Mizoram would be facing a contempt of court in a case concerning disposal of a cough syrup boxes known as Zephdyl here.
Additional district magistrate K L Liana here today has issed a show cause notice to the president and secretary of the Mizoram Drugs Control Officers Association, asking them why they should not be charged with contempt of court for criticising a judgement made by his court in an article published in a local vernacular paper.
According to the procecution, the drugs inspectors had seized 939 boxes of Zephydl from a godown of the Air Trnsport Corporation in the capital last November and had allegedly destroyed one hundred boxes while sending the remaining boxes to the pharmaceuitical company that had sent it without giving proper information to the court.
Although the court had given permission to destroy the boxes as requested by the drugs inspectors, the distruction was not witnessed by any magistrate nor was information furnished to the court on how the boxes containing prohibited medication were destroyed.
As a result of this, the public prosecutor Lianhrin had appealed to the court against the drug inspectors as a result of which the court had severly taken to task the drug inspectors last week.
The district magistrate has summoned the association's president and secretary Lalsawma and F Lalliantlunaga respectively on June 6, 2006 as well as the editor of the vernacular paper which had published the press release.
