Assault on senior cop, DGP slams Lucknow police

Lucknow, May 31 (UNI) Furious over a daring incident in which five youth last evening tried to crush a senior cop under their vehicle and later whisking him away in the state capital, Utar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Bua Singh has slammed Lucknow police for slow action in the matter.

The five youths claiming themselves to be kin of a senior leader of the ruling dispensation, tried to crush under their vehicle Circle Officer (CO) Rajesh Sahni who had stopped their jeep with red beacon and hooters.

When the officer demanded papers of the vehicle, they tried to crush him. In a bid to escape, Sahni jumped on the bonnet of the jeep. The identically-dressed youth later dumped him at the SSP's residence after driving for over two km. The incident sent shock waves among the residents of the state capital and the police.

The CO kept perched on the bonnet in full view of other policemen and passers-by, much to the ire of senior police brass of the State.

Later last night, the DGP called IG (zone), DIG (range) and the SSP and criticised the district police machinery for not taking stern action against the culprits.

But SSP G K Goswami told UNI this morning that a case of attempt to murder and attempt to kidnap and assault on officer on duty has been registered against the five, identified as: Harshwardhan, Prithviraj, Rajwardhan, Narayan and Udai Pratap. The five belong to Kanpur and father of one of them is reported to be a proclaimed offender in Kanpur.
