17 states to take part in National Rowing Championship

Kolkata, May 31 (UNI) Teams from 17 states will participate in the 9th Sub-junior and 11th Challengers National Rowing Championship to be held at Ravindra Sarovar here from tomorrow.

Announcing this, West Bengal Rowing Association President Girish Phadnis said, ''More than 300 boys and girls from 17 affiliated units will vie for honours in four disciplines---skulls, double skulls, bear and coxed four in the four-day enent.

While Tamil Nadu will defend their crown in sub-juniors, which is an U-15 category competition, the Challengers is an open tournament.

The course for both the meet is 500 mts and for the first time it is going to be three lanes also.

The Challengers category will be represented by oarsmen and women who have not won a medal at the national level.

The championship will have a third category that is called Masters and will feature senior oarsmen from Bengal.

While Bengal has the largest contingent for the tournament with 43 representatives, Manipur are second with 30.

The member states participating include Orissa, Kerala, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu&Kashmir, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Manipur and Services Engineering Rowing Association.
