Series of programmes in capital on eve of World No Tobacco day

New Delhi, May 30 (UNI) A series of programmes to spread the message about the ills of tobacco were held in the capital today on the eve of 'World No Tobacco Day'.

A tableau-cum-mobile exhibition on the harmful effects of tobacco, that will create awareness on the issue all over the city, was flagged off from outside the Delhi Secretariat this afternoon by Delhi health minister Yoganand Shashtri.

Organised by the Heart Care foundation of India and the Federation of NCR doctors, the tableau will spread awareness on tobacco's ill effects by holding street play and distributing pamphlets to the general public.

Health workers would also visit every slum area in the city to create awareness about hazards of tobacco consumption and on the spot counselling and check-ups to those who want to quit smoking or tobacco chewing.

On the eve of 'World No Tobacco Day', the Universal Helpage (India) trust organised a seminar-cum-training workshop on 'Tobacco control Act and its enforcement'.

The main aim of the programme, where all enforcement officers of Delhi government and the Centre, medical superintendents of Government hospital, senior railway officers and depot managers of DTC participated, was to sensitize about the Act and methodology of its enforcement in an effective manner through presentation of senior officers of the ministry, WHO and Delhi Government.

On the occasion of Day tomorrow, the Vithalbhai Patel Chest institute, in collaboration with the World Lung Foundation, South Asia, will organise a public education programme on the harmful effects of tobacco.
