Gujarat-based NCCL seeks Aamir Khan 's apology
Ahmedabad, May 30 : Gujarat-based National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) today sought an apology from film star Aamir Khan for joining issues with Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar.
NCCL president V K Saxena, while appreciating the film star's declaration that he is a true nationalist, however, said the actor is unwittingly hurting the sentiments of five-crore people of Gujarat.
He questioned the actor's locus standi in meddling in the Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&S) of the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) of Sardar Sardar Project (SSP) without the knowledge about its status.
''If the Hurriyats are coming in the way of peace process in Jammu&Kashmir, NBA too has come in the way of completing SSP. Just as the Hurriyats face public anger and invite public wrath for their dubious stand on J&K, every Gujarati reacts with protests against whosoever is coming in the way of construction of SSP. What the Hurriyats are to India, NBA is to Gujarat!'' Mr Saxena said.
Mr Saxena said the people of Gujarat are peace loving and have not yet resorted to any violent protests as usually witnessed in other states. He cited the examples of the Cauvery water dispute and the sex scandal in J&K where a local outfit, Dukhtaran-I-Millat has not only imposed a blanket ban on all beauty parlours but also destroyed their properties.
''Mr Khan you have perhaps unwittingly hurt the sentiments of Gujaratis by sitting on 'dharna' with NBA activists. You must appreciate that the people of Gujarat have shown exemplary restrain from indulging in violent protests,'' the NCCL has said.
