Srinagar, May 30 (UNI) About 12 Jammu and Kashmir government employees were wounded today as police used baton charge and teargas to prevent them from taking out a rally to press their demands.

The rally was proposed to be taken out from the Government Medical College (GMC) to Lal Chowk here under the aegis of the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC).

Hundreds of agitating employees gathered at the GMC here this afternoon and tried to take out a rally to Lal Chowk to press for their long-standing demands, but were stopped by the police.

This resulted in clashes between the police and the slogan-shouting government employees even as they tried to break open the gates of the GMC.

Police resorted to baton charge and then fired teargas shells to disperse the agitationists, resulting in injuries to about 12 employees.

''Despite assurances by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, our problems have not been resolved. The Chief Minister should fulfill the promises made to the employees,'' an EJAC statement said here.

Meanwhile, work in all government offices here was affected today in view of the proposed rally.
