Govt to enact law for checking power pilferage

Patna, May 30: Concerned with the high percentage of pilferage of power, the Bihar government would enact a law to curb the menance.

Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav told sources here today that the government was actively considering introduction of a bill in the next session of the assembly. He said the problem of power pilferage or theft existed not only in Bihar but even place like Delhi reported 40 per cent power pilferage. The pilferage of power in Bihar was 50 per cent.

Mr Yadav said collection and payment of electricity bills would now be made through private agencies or franchisees to improve mobilisation of revenues. He said tenders had been floated for this purpose. Private agencies, he said, would be paid commission of 10-15 per cent of total amount collected and paid against the electricity bills.

He said appointment of 'Vidyut Duts' in the rural areas was yielding positive results. These 'Vidyut Duts' were entrusted with the task of collecting and depositing electricity bills by receiving money from end users.
