Free colour TV scheme from Anna's birthday

Chennai, May 30: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today announced that 14 inch colour television will be given to poor families as announced in the DMK party's poll manifesto.

Replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address, he said the government would constitute a committee comprising representatives of leaders of legislature parties to implement the scheme in a transparent manner.

The committee would also oversee the procurement and disbursement of the televisions to the poor.

Global tenders would be invited for this purpose, he said and added that the scheme would be launched on the birth anniversaries of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai and Rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramaswamy on September 15 and 17, respectively.

It would be implemented in a phased manner, he added.
