Kanpur, May 30 (UNI) Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) students -- protesting the OBC quota proposal of the centre -- have decided to remove their surnames and suffix 'Bharat' to their first names.

''We are 'Bharatiya' first and should be known by that name,'' Rahul Gupta, convenor of Forum of Indians against Reservation (FIR), which is spearheading the anti-quota movement, said here today.

Meanwhile, the hunger strike by IIT-K students continued for the third day demanding withdrawal of the OBC quota proposal in higher education.

He said the students, on rotation, in batches of 10 including two girls will sit on hunger strike for 24 hrs. Even the parents are also observing fast alongwith their wards, he informed.

Meanwhile, the hunger strike by IITians is getting mass support from doctors, traders, general students and bank employees.

Mr Gupta asserted the strike would continue till their demands were met by the Centre.

FIR is making plans to garner more support of common people to their agitation.
