Water saving device handed over to Sukhanand society

Ludhiana, May 29 (UNI) Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) handed over a laser leveler, a sophisticated water saving device, to the cooperative society of Sukhanand village in Moga district.

This costly instrument was procured by the Farm Power and Machinery Department of the College of Agricultural Engineering of PAU under a project 'Development of new second generation seed drills'. This project is funded by International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), Mexico City.

The instrument was presented to the society yesterday by the Director of Extension Education, Dr S S Gill. He elucidated on the working and usefulness of the laser-leveler.

During field trials the leveler reduced irrigation time and improved water utilisation efficiency. In the process the laser leveler increases yields because it helps farmers in better management of irrigation water as also other farm inputs.

Principal Investigator of the project, Dr H S Sidhu, made a presentation on CIMMYT's role in making available such technologies, explaining in detail the operation of the machine. Dr Sidhu said that laser leveler is used for accurate leveling of land. This machine is fully automatic and can be operated with 50 horse power or above tractors.

Dr Sidhu said,''its operation is fairly simple. The field to be leveled is surveyed using a grade rod and the mean grade value is set. The machine automatically controls the necessary cuts and fills to achieve uniform level.'' The machine which costs Rs 4.5 lakh can level five acres of land in a day.
