Somnath calls for expanding trade with Iceland
New Delhi, May 29: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today called for expanding trade and co-operation with Iceland to further cement friendly relations between the two countries.
''India is keen to strengthen relations with Iceland.... There is a lot of scope for expanding bilateral trade and cooperation in various areas,'' the Speaker said when Iceland Ambassador Sturla Sigurjonsson called on him at his official residence here.
Mr Chatterjee said sharing of knowledge and expertise between the two nations would help in cementing the friendly relations.
When Mr Sigurjonsson briefed him about Iceland's expertise in geo-thermal power, Mr Chatterjee said India would also explore such non-conventional energy sources.
He thanked Iceland for its continued support to India's viewpoint in all international fora, including the UN.
Mr Chatterjee said he was looking forward to the visit of the Speaker of Icelandic Parliament to India in November this year.
Mr Sigurjonsson also extended an invitation to Mr Chattejee to visit Iceland.
