SC refuses stay on reservation, agitation gains momentum

New Delhi, May 29 (UNI) The anti-reservation agitation gained momentum today with students from IIT, Delhi and JNU starting a relay hunger strike, even as the Supreme Court, in a major blow to their cause, refused to stay the Centre's order on the OBC quota in higher educational institutions.

An ''Oversight Committee'', headed by Administrative Reforms Commission Chairman Veerappa Moilyhas been set up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's approval to help implement the reservation policy and suggest seat increases to cushion the impact.

The committee, which includes some of the top technocrats and administrators, will get input from 21 experts on engineering, management and academic education and give its findings by August 31.

Planning Commission Member Secretary R R Shah is the group's Member Secretary, and Members include Planning Commission Member Secretary B Mungekar, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Director General R Mashelkar and University Grants Commission Chairman Sukhadeo K Thorat.
