Petition filed seeking CBI enquiry into meerut fire
New Delhi, May 29 (UNI) A man who lost five members of his family, including three children, in the Meerut fire tragedy last month, today moved the Supreme Court seeking a CBI inquiry into the incident in which more than 50 people died and over 100 were injured.
Sanjay Gupta, the petitioner, has prayed to the Supreme Court to transfer the investigation into the April 10 fire tragedy to CBI to bring the culprits, including officials responsible, to book.
The petitioner has alleged that till date no action has been taken against any of the officials, including the then district magistrate and the SSP Meerut, who granted permission to the organisers of the fair without ensuring fire safety measures.
According to Mr Gupta the state government has left no stone unturned in shielding the culprits and not even a single officer has been suspended till date.
The petitioner also alleged that the local police was not conducting any serious investigation into the incident to fix responsibility on the officials so that they may be adequately prosecuted for their criminal negligence.
He alleged that politicians, including Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal have not kept their promises of giving compensation to the families of those killed and injured.
The petitioner prayed to the court that in order to ensure free, fair and speedy investigation into the case, the investigation be transferred to an independent investigating agency like CBI.
