One dies of heat stroke in Amritsar
Chandigarh, May 29 (UNI) One person died of heat stroke even as many areas in north-west region were lashed by rain dipping the temperature and providing respite from scorching heat.
A migrant labourer while working in a paddy field suffered from heat stroke and died at Devidasspora village in Amritsar district today, taking the toll due to the heat wave to eleven in the region this summer.
The mercury stayed two degrees to six degrees below normal at most places in Punjab and Haryana.
In Haryana, the day temperature plummeted to 41.4 degrees at Hissar from 46 degrees Celsius recorded yesterday. Humid weather conditions prevailed in Hissar which continued to be the hottest palce in the state. The mercury hovered four degrees below normal at Karnal following rain, recording 33.7 degrees Celsius. The town measured six mm rainfall till 0830 hours. Panchkula reported 12 mm rain.
The mercury also dropped in Punjab, settling at 37.7 degrees, two degrees below normal, at Amritsar which recorded 2.4 mm rain till this morning. Ludhiana and Patiala recorded four degrees below normal tempeature, respectively recording 38.0 degrees and 37.2 degrees Celsius. Balachour also experienced downpour, measuring 9.3 mm rain.
Many areas in Himachal Pradesh, including Sujanpur Tira, Nagrota Surian, Naudan, Guler, Bhuntar and Pandoh experienced moderate rain.
However, the tempeature stayed two degrees above normal in the capital town of Shimla recording 25.8 degrees.
Chandigarh and its adjoining areas were lashed by sharp showers early in the morning that brought down the temperature to 37.4 degrees, two degrees below normal.
The Weather Office here said that western disturbance is lying over Jammu and Kashmir and its neighbourhood and upper air cyclonic circulation over north Rajasthan and its neighbourhood.
It predicted moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh and light to moderate rain or thundershowers at few places in Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.
Hailstorm or thundersquall with speed exceeding 65 km per hour is likely to occur at isolated places in the region during the period.
