Heavy rains inundate fresh areas, 20,000 marooned in Tripura
Agartala, May 29 (UNI) With the South-West monsoon being vigorous in Tripura, fresh areas in this capital city and elsewhere in the state were inundated following heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours.
Official sources said over 20,000 people had been marooned and dry food were being distributed among them. Several kutcha houses had collapsed due to the rainfall. A 65-year-old woman died when the boundary wall of her house collapsed at Sabroom in South Tripura district.
The sources said low-lying areas of Agartala, Bishalgarh, Belonia, Sabroom, Kailashahar and Sonamura were inundated due to incessant rainfall over the past few days.
They said boats were pressed into service at several places to shift the marooned people to safer places.
Local Met office had issued a warning saying that heavy to very heavy rains were likely at a few places in Tripura during the next 24 hours. It said rain and thundershowers were also likely to occur at most places in Tripura.
Arundhutinagar recorded a maximum rainfall of 13 cm in the past 24 hours, followed by Sonamura (9 cm), Agartala and Belonia (7 cm each) and Kailashahar and Sabroom (5 cm each).
