Former Delhi Mayor Shanti Desai dies

New Delhi, May 29 (UNI) Former Delhi Mayor and former MCD Standing Committee Chairman Shanti Desai died this afternoon following sudden illness.

Mr Desai died at around 1700 hrs in Ahmedabad where he had gone to attend a function, MCD sources said.

A senior and respected member of the corporation, Mr Desai had been Mayor of Delhi for two years in 2001 and 2002. Prior to that he was chairman of standing committee of the MCD for three years.

Mr Desai's body will be brought to Delhi tonight to his Khari Baoli residence and the cremation will be held tomorrow, the sources said.

DPCC president Rambabu Sharma has mourned the death of Mr Desai describing him as a veteran politician who worked for the development of Delhi.
