Centennial Exhibition of Nobel Prize comes to India

Bangalore, May 29 (UNI) The Centennial Exhibition of the Nobel Prize, titled 'Cultures of Creativity,' was inaugurated in the city today, providing a rare opportunity for public to learn more about Nobel Laureates.

The three-month exhibition, opened at the Visveshvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum here, was brought to India by Ericsson, the Nobel Museum and the Nobel Foundation.

Besides displaying the photographs of the 780 Nobel Laureates, the exhibition also showcased their personal belongings.

Speaking after inaugurating the Exhibition, Nobel Foundation Executive Director Michael Sohiman said the Exhibition, launched in 2001 to commemorate 100 years of establishment of the Nobel Prize, had so far toured 11 countries. It was organised with an aim to create awareness about the philosophy behind the Nobel Prize and throw light on the lives of Nobel Laureates.

He said a nation-wide contest would also be held for students during the exhibition to raise their awareness about the prestigious Prize. As part of the programme, a quiz competition would be held for students from class five to seven on Nobel Laureates. Ten winners and their class teachers would be flown to Bangalore to visit the exhibition.

A film on Shantiniketan, where the first Nobel Laureate from India Ravindranath Tagore lived, would be be screened during the Exhibition.

To a question, Mr Sohiman said Bangalore was the only place selected for the Exhibition as it had been growing in various fields, besides housing reputed institutions like Indian Space Research Organisation and Indian Institute of Science.
