BJP criticises UPA for farmers suicide, inflation, reservation

New Delhi, May 29: The BJP will tomorrow move a resolution criticising the UPA government's performance, especially its failure to check farmers suicide, inflation and ''mishandling'' of the implementation of reservation for OBCs, at the party's executive.

Briefing mediapersons about the two-day BJP Executive, party spokesman Ravi Shakar Prasad said that the resolution, to be moved by party General Secretary Arun Jaitley, would focus on the political, economic and foreign policies of the UPA government.

''Former BJP president L K Advani will give guidance on the formulation of the resolution,'' he said.

Today, a resolution hailing the services of former Party General Secretary Pramod Mahajan was moved by BJP Delhi Chief Harshvardhan.

Expressing grief over the passing away of Mr Mahajan, senior leader Venkaiah Naidu said that this was the first BJP National Executive during the past 25 to 30 years where Mr Mahajan was not present.

The Executive deliberated the results of the recent elections in five states, and will provide inputs for the formulation of strategy for the four states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Punjab and Manipur -- going to elections in the next one year, Mr Prasad said.

In his address, party president Rajnath Singh criticised the UPA government for its failure to check farmers' suicide and rising prices of essential commodities. ''The UPA government has not been able to fulfill any of its promises,'' he said.

Expressing views on developments in the neighbouring countries, the executive felt that these could have a grave impact on the security of India. It also urged the Maoists in Nepal to shun violence as it was posing a serious threat to the country.

Stating that the left parties are leading the foreign policy of the UPA government by proxy, the executive charged the Left with ''enjoying power without any accountability.'' It also criticised the UPA government about the manner of implementation of the reservation policy, which was ''dividing society and compromising with the knowledge and excellence of institutions.'' The recent spurt of terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir was also dicussed at the meet, with the party seeking to know who had provoked the attacks on innocent tourists in Srinagar during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit there.

The valedictory session of the BJP Executive would be chaired by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
