Heavy rain leaves 3 dead, 250 families homeless in Nagpur
Nagpur, May 28 (UNI) Three people were killed, about 50 others injured and more than 250 families in four localities rendered homeless, as pre-monsoon rains accompanied by strong winds and heailstorms, lashed different parts of city.
Police sources today said a 70-year-old-woman Chindbai Hatwar was killed and 50 others were injured when heavy rains with winds and hailstorms damaged over 300 houses in slums of Rautnagar, Bada Tajbagh, Sharda layout, and Hanuman Nagar at about 1630 hrs yesterday. The injured were admitted to different hospitals where their condition was stated to be stable.
In another incident, two people who were heading to the city from Katol on their motorbike were killed after a tree fell on them on Kalemeshwar-Nagpur road, sources said.
The premonsoon rain was so heavy that the accompanying wind blew rooftops of slums here rendering more than 1,500 people homeless. The affected have been taken to zilla parishad school in Raut Nagar under the jurisdiction of Kuhi police station.
Divisional Commissioner Anand Limaye, District Collector Sanjay Mukherjee, MLA Chandrasekhar Bawankule and State BJP President Nitin Gadkari were among those who visited rehabilitation centre of Zilla Parishad.
Mr Limaye directed concerned officials to undertake a survey of the damaged houses and provide succour to the homeless families on war footing.
