Woman killed as storm hits HP; Property worth lakhs destroyed

Dharamshala, May 27 (UNI) A woman was killed and five other people were injured while several trees uprooted after high velocity winds accompanied by hailstorm and thundershowers hit several areas of Himachal pradesh last night, police today said.

A huge tree fell on the hut of Rajasthani labourers near Nardha Sharda Temple in Nagrota Bhagwan area of Kangra district last night, killing a woman, identified as Roshan Devi, 55, on the spot and injuring five others.

Several hundred mango and pine trees and electricity poles were uprooted in Nagrota Bhagwan, Massal, Kwadi and Bunnaid villages of the district, disrupting road traffic on the Pathankot-Mandi Highway and rail traffic on the Jogindernager-Pathankot railway section, official sources said.

Power and telephone line were also snapped at several places due to the storm that hit the district at about 1800 hrs last night and official sources said many villages were without electricity since last night.

Rooftops of several houses were also blown away in the storm.
