Sikhs ask for smooth schooling for community students

New York, May 27 (UNI) A delegation of Sikhs in New Jersey met acting Commissioner of Education Department Lucille Davey, and urged her to ensure safety and security for Sikh schoolchildren in the state.

According to a statement released here yesterday by the Sikh Coalition, the meeting was facilitated by Indian-American Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula.

The Sikhs emphasised that there must be basic understanding of their religion and its practices among school officials.

A Sikh boy studying at Edison Township, who had earlier been harassed by some of his classmates, also attended the meeting.

Delegation leaders pointed out that ''diversity training'' was being given to school staff following their efforts, and said harassment has now ended.

''We contacted the school's principal and offered to educate students and staff on diversity and Sikh practices,''" the statement quoted community activist Guruparkash Singh as saying.

''Basic education went a long way to build a climate of understanding, Mr Chivukula said.

''New Jersey schools should be a place for everyone,'' he said adding that he was committed to working for all communities, including the Sikhs.
