OIC calls on Muslims to offer Indonesian quake aid

RIYADH, May 27 (Reuters) The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) today called on Muslim countries to aid the victims of an earthquake in Indonesia which has killed more than 2,700 people.

''The secretary-general appeals to all the OIC member states and Islamic relief organisations to come to the rescue and lend all their assistance,'' OIC chief Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said in a statement.

The Saudi-based OIC is the world's biggest Muslim body, gathering 57 countries with majority Muslim populations around the world.

The Indonesian quake, centred on the city of Yogyakarta on the main island of Java, killed more than 2,700 people and seriously injured an estimated 1,700.

About 85 per cent of Indonesia's 220 million people are Muslim, making it the world's biggest Muslim country.
