Shillong, May 27 (UNI) Church leaders in Christian majority Meghalaya have raised their voice against 'Da Vinci Code,' even as the film hit the screen across the country following clearance from the central government.

''We are against the film 'Da Vinci Code,' as its content is blasphemous,'' said Rev Dominic Jala, Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church.

The Archbishop said here today that the church would appeal to the state government to follow the example of Punjab and ban the controversial film.

''The Punjab government has banned 'Da Vinci Code' because of its blasphemous content. Our government should also follow suit,'' he said.

''We cannot stop people from screening the movie. But we will tell the believers of Christianity not to subscribe to what writers other than the holy Bible,'' said Rev Dr J F Jyrwa, senior administrative secretary of Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly (KJPA).

The Garo Students Union (GSU) Khasi Hills zone has crticised the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry for giving a green signal to the controversial movie albeit with an Adult certificate.

''The decision would affect the sentiments of the people who follow Christianity, especially the youth,'' said Alex Marak, additional general secretary of GSU.

The student leader appealed to the church leaders and the NGOs of the region to raise their voices against the movie.

State Chief Minister D D Lapang has recently told mediapersons the government discussed the film and instructed the General Administration Department to scrutinise it before taking any decision on putting a ban on it.

''We will ask the department to speed up the work respecting the people's sentiments,'' said Mr Lapang, who is also a senior Presbyterian Church elder.
