Kolkata, May 27 (UNI) The two-day CPI(M) politbureau meeting began here this morning to discuss the two years' performance of the UPA government and the result of Assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory.

Except veteran leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet, all other members of the party's highest decision-making body including Party General Secretary Prakash Karat, veteran leader Jyoti Basu, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and his counterparts in Kerala and Tripura--Mr V S Achutanandan and Mr Manik Sarkar respectively--are among others attending the meeting.

The party also has on its agenda the issue of reservation in higher educational institutions and its relationship with the non -Left parties, including the Congress.

Party sources said the Polibureau would review the UPA Government's performance in the light of the Common Minimum Programme (CMP), particularly in the areas of alleviation of poverty, employment generation, protection of industrial rights and Foreign Direct Investment.

The meeting is expected to assess its achievements in making the Congress-led Government fall in line with the Left demands in several areas as well the differences on various issues, including privatisation of airports, FDI in banks and price hike of petroleum and petroleum products.

The Politbureau will also analyse the results of the recently held Assembly elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Based on its electoral success in West Bengal and Kerala and a considerable gain in Tamil Nadu, the party is expected to discuss an outline for its future programme for mounting pressure on the coalition Government at the centre on economic and industrial issues.

The sources said the findings of the Politbureau would be placed at the party's Central Committee meeting to be held in Hyderabad from June eight to ten.

With the issue of OBC reservation burning all over the country, the party, which had already expressed a primary view on the subject, was expected to take a comprehensive stand, they said.

The meeting would also take stock of its gains towards emerging as a potential force in national politics by supporting the UPA Government and at the same time opposing it on different issues both at the centre and in states.

While the party had so far been successful in keeping the BJP out of power, the meeting was crucial in deciding its future direction by weighing its political gains out of the ''love and hate relation with the Congress,'' the sources said.
