Over 49,000 people register for employment under NGES: CM

Shimla, May 26 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today said 49,152 people have registered themselves with Chamba and Sirmaur district administrations for employment under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), which is being implemented in the state.

Speaking at a meeting called to review the progress in the implementation of the NREGS by the states at Delhi, he said the state government had provided jobs to 18,651 people out of a total of 20,943 people who had applied for jobs under the scheme for which the state government had issued job cards to 46,422 households.

Mr Singh said his government would constitute an Employment Guarantee Council in the state to monitor and review the implementation of the scheme soon.

Besides technical and administrative personnel would also be appointed at different levels for effective implementation of the scheme and modalities for their appointments would also be finalized soon, he said.

He said the state government has chalked out a detailed programme for training officials and non-officials involved in the implementation of the scheme, adding that orientation-cum-training programmes would also be organized at districts, block and panchayat levels.

The Himachal government was giving top priority to the construction of link roads under the scheme and has also sought centre's permission for the construction of foot bridges, community buildings, community centres and dispensaries to enhance the rural connectivity and ensure overall rural development under the scheme, he said.
