Lanka failed to remember Lord's lesson, says Sangakkara
BIRMINGHAM, England, May 25 (Reuters) Wicketkeeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara said Sri Lanka were disappointed not to have learnt their lesson from the opening test against England after they were bowled out for 141 today.
The visitors were asked to follow on in the Lord's test but resilient batting in the second innings, when Sri Lanka amassed 537, denied England a victory which had seemed to be just a formality after three days.
Today, England again dominated the first day of the second test by rolling the Sri Lankans over and then reaching 138-3 at the close.
''It was not good batting,'' Sangakkara said. ''We made them look better by the way we batted.
''The way we batted in the second innings at Lord's was the way we should bat every time we go out there.
''The wicket maybe had just a bit in it up until lunch but after that it turned out to be a great wicket to bat on. I think 300-plus would have been a good first innings total.'' England's 21-year-old seamer Liam Plunkett was in high spirits after taking his test best performance of 3-43. His figures would have been even better had Monty Panesar not dropped Farveez Maharoof.
The Durham rookie, playing his fourth test, captured the wickets of Michael Vandort and Mahela Jayawardene in his opening over.
''It was nice to pick up two wickets in my first over,'' he said. ''I had a few problems with nerves at Lord's so after taking a wicket in my first over I was then able to relax.'' Reuters DH RN0054
